An eminent Physicist, Professor Mesbahuddin Ahmed have had his education in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Kent, Manchester and Cambridge in the UK and International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. Professor Ahmed did his BSc (Hons in Physics) and MSc (Thesis Group) from the University of Dhaka in 1967 and 1968, respectively. In 1973, he obtained PhD from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. for his research in Condensed Matter Physics. The work was eminently productive and the discovery of anomalous features and their explanation in dilute magnetic alloys are recognized. He completed his post-doctoral studies in Manchester and in Cambridge where he worked on Superconductivity and Spin Glasses. He was a visiting Professor in Manchester, UK. for one year in 1990-1991 on a Fellowship from the Royal Society. Since 1974, he has been an academic member of the Department of Physics, University of Dhaka with particular interest in teaching and research of Condensed Matter Physics. He supervised MSc and PhD students and has co-authored over 100 scientific papers and published these papers in different peer-reviewed journals in home and abroad. For his research into the Electronic Structure of Binary Alloys, Dr. Ahmed received support from donor Agencies like ICTP, which benefitted many research assistants and postgraduate students by facilitating extensive collaboration with other institutes. He wrote a Book on Basic Physics in Bangla, published by Bangla Academy. He was the Editor of “Dhaka University Journal of Science in 2002-2008”. He was one of the Associates and Senior Associates of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy in 1993-1999 and 1999-2009, respectively. Dr. Mesbauddin Ahmed served as Dean, Faculty of Science and Provost, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, University of Dhaka. Professor Ahmed was a member of the Senate of University of Dhaka. Dr. Mesbauddin Ahmed has served as Head of Quality Assurance Unit, HEQEP Project, Bangladesh University Grant Commission and took lead role in establishing Quality Assurance Units, IQAC’s in Public and Private Universities. He was Head of Quality Assurance Unit to prepare a draft copy of Bangladesh Accreditation Council Act. Professor Ahmed was the Director of the Network Research Project, Italy and conducted research on various areas of Theoretical Physics in collaboration with India, Nepal and Bangladesh. In 2016, Dr. Ahmed become one of the Fellows of Bangladesh Academy of Science (BAS) for his outstanding contribution in education and research. He has been elected as the Secretary of the BAS since 2014. He is the member of both the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) and Executive Council for National Science and Technology (ECNST) in Bangladesh. Professor Ahmed has travelled widely to UK, USA, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Germany, France, Spain and many other places. He was the ViceChancellor of the Jagannath University, Dhaka (2009-2013). Professor Ahmed retired as Professor from the University of Dhaka in July 2013. Professor Mesbauddin Ahmed is married and blessed with two daughters.
