Biography of Professor Md. Golam Shahi Alam

 

Professor Md. Golam Shahi Alam gained first class DVM and MSc degrees from the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in 1974 and 1975, respectively. He became the Fellow of the Royal Veterinary College, Sweden in 1981. In 1985 he obtained PhD in Veterinary Clinical Science from the University of Liverpool, U.K. He completed his post-doctoral study at the University of London in 1991. He was visiting researcher at the National Institute of Animal Industry, Tsukuba; Nagoya and Iwate Universities, Japan in 1998, 2002 and 2011, respectively. Since 1977, he has been an academic member of the Department of Surgery & Obstetrics, BAU with particular interest in teaching, research and clinical care of reproduction, health and welfare. He supervised MS & PhD students and has co-authored over 65 scientific papers. Dr. Alam has generated four technologies through 10 successful research projects. He received support from donor agencies, which benefitted many research assistants and postgraduate students by facilitating extensive collaboration with other institutes. He has published 115 papers in peerreviewed journals. He wrote a Bengali Book “Cattle Fertility and General Disease Control”. He also wrote a chapter entitled “Nutrition and Health Management” in Handbook of Dairy Nutrition - Bangladesh, published by American Soybean Association International Marketing. He is the Editor of “The Bangladesh Veterinarian”. He was one of the members of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System. Dr. Alam served as Coordinator, Committee for Advanced Studies & Research. He was the Head of Department of Surgery & Obstetrics and Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science. He was the founder Provost of Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzib Hall and Dormitory Super of Nuclear Scientist Dr. Wazed Mia PhD Dormitory. Professor Alam was a member of the Syndicate of BAU and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Trisal, Mymensingh and since 2013 he has been working as one of members of the Regent Board of the Jashore University of Science & Technology. Dr. Alam has provided consultancy services to BRAC for establishing Bull Station and Artificial Insemination services for the private sector. He was a National Consultant for Veterinary Services in Bangladesh (2005) to FAO, and International Consultant for the Liberia National Livestock Policy and Action Plan (2014) supported by BRAC International. Professor Alam was one of the members of the Bangladesh Veterinary Council (Statutory body) from 2012 to 2014 where he was associated in formulating a professional standard for veterinary graduates. In 2016 Dr. Alam was awarded Gold Medal by the Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture for his outstanding contribution in education and research. Professor Alam has travelled widely, to United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Japan, Egypt, Liberia and Saudi Arabia. He was the 4 th Vice-Chancellor of the Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh (2014 – 2018). Dr. Alam retired as Professor from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in July 2017. Before joining the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, he worked as a Professor (Contractual) at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Gopalganj. Professor Alam is married to Satara Alam, blessed with a daughter and a son.
